In October 2019, I landed in Germany with a suitcase, A1 German, and a lot of hope.
Back then, I came for a master’s program in urban planning. But I never imagined I’d later switch careers, learn C1 German, and build a whole new life here — while studying again in data science.
Here’s what I wish I knew from the beginning:
You don’t need perfect German to start — but you’ll need it to stay
I underestimated how much language shapes daily life. From dealing with landlords to understanding contracts, German becomes essential. Start learning now — even if it’s just 10 minutes a day.
Housing is stressful — but not impossible
My first apartment was an expensive student dorm. But it allowed me to register my address (Anmeldung) easily and relieved a lot of pressure. I’ll share how I later found cheaper housing too.
Money matters — track everything
Even if Germany is cheaper than some countries, you need budgeting skills. I worked part-time at IKEA, did freelance copywriting, and now work as a HiWi — it all adds up.
🎒 Whether you’re preparing your own move or are just curious — I’ll keep sharing my honest experiences here.
Let’s make this journey a little easier, together.
